Economic Development in Murray Shire

Murray Shire Council is recognised as one of the fastest growing Local Government areas (LGA) in NSW.

The Council area has consistently been recognised in the Top 10 Fastest Growing LGAs in NSW for the last 10 years in the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Regional Population Growth publications.

Murray Shire Council has achieved an average growth rate of 2.1% from 2002-2007 and in 2007 the population of the Shire was estimated at 6,941, achieving a growth rate of 3.6% for the year.

The growth of Murray Shire can be attributed to the following features:

  • Irrigation farming
  • Highly developed Tourism industry
  • Lifestyle residential destination
  • Diverse industry
  • Proximity to Melbourne (205 kilometres)
  • Within a strong region

Murray Shire Council is regarded as a "Can Do" Council, that encourages appopriate development. Council's officers can assist with advice in planning processes and identification of suitable land.
