Local Council Elections for 13 September 2008MEDIA RELEASE: Paul Lynch MP, Minister for Local Government, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Minister Assisting the Minister for Health (Mental Health) State Parliament has passed legislation to hold local council elections on 13 September 2008. Minister for Local Government Paul Lynch said the date was brought forward by two weeks to avoid a clash with school holidays. "It's a common sense decision that gives voters in New South Wales every opportunity to have their say on who represents them," Mr Lynch said. "Holding the poll during school holidays would have inconvenienced the travel plans of many families," he said. Mr Lynch said the amendment to the Local Government Act 1993 also ensured party registrations remained valid. "A number of political parties registered on time last year in anticipation of an election date of 27 September," he said. "The amendment provides certainty for these parties," Mr Lynch said. The NSW Government consulted with the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW and the NSW Electoral Commission before introducing the amendments. Mr Lynch urged eligible voters to ensure they are enrolled to vote. Local council elections were last held in 2004.
